Civic Engagement and Representative Mapping

Helping people understand who represents them—and how to participate

People often have concerns they want to raise but are unsure whom to approach, what responsibilities different bodies hold or how to present their case effectively.

Strategic Resolution connects representative mapping with practical civic engagement resources, helping organisations and communities move from identifying the right people to communicating with them constructively.

Representative mapping

Using postcodes, representative mapping identifies the elected representatives associated with the places where people live.

For an organisation whose students, members or supporters live across different areas, this can reveal the parliamentary constituencies and council wards they belong to, and identify relevant MPs, councillors and, in London, Greater London Authority representatives.

The process includes checking postcode information, identifying uncertain records for clarification and organising results into usable contact information. Mapping can be undertaken using reference numbers and postcodes, without requiring individuals’ names.

Turning information into participation

Knowing who represents you is a starting point. Effective civic engagement also involves understanding responsibilities, developing a clear request and choosing an appropriate route for action.

Strategic Resolution’s approach helps people:

  • Understand the roles of elected representatives and public bodies.

  • Bring together relevant evidence and explain their concerns clearly.

  • Prepare correspondence, briefings and questions for meetings.

  • Take part in consultations and constructive discussions.

  • Keep records, follow up responses and identify appropriate next steps.

The approach is politically neutral and supports informed, voluntary participation.

Building on practical work

The mapping approach grew from work connecting college students’ postcodes with their parliamentary representatives. This provided a practical foundation for developing tools that could serve other educational institutions, charities, membership organisations and community groups.

Alongside the mapping tools, we are bringing together earlier work on civic participation, guides to MPs and councillors, and the conduct of meetings. These resources support the knowledge, confidence and practical skills people need to take part effectively.

Supporting the London Community Project

Within Peaceful Planet’s London Community Project, representative mapping can help residents identify their elected representatives. The wider civic engagement methods help connect local evidence with clear requests, constructive dialogue and follow-up.

These tools also have applications beyond the London project, wherever an organisation wants to help its community understand representation and participate in public life.
