Topic 1:  An In Introduction to Identity and Location Rights

Identity and Location Rights, Articles 12 to 17 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), refer to the fundamental human rights that protect an individual’s privacy, freedom of movement, and the right to establish a personal identity within society. They play a crucial role in preserving personal autonomy, dignity, and the ability to make choices in one’s life without undue interference from the government or other entities.

Right to Privacy (Article 12): This right safeguards an individual’s private life, home, correspondence, and reputation. It protects against unwarranted intrusion, surveillance, or defamation, ensuring that individuals have control over their personal information and activities.

Freedom of Movement (Article 13): This right grants individuals the freedom to move within their own country, choose their place of residence, and leave or return to their country as they wish. It allows people to explore opportunities, escape adverse conditions, and maintain connections with their loved ones.

Right to Seek Asylum (Article 14): This right allows individuals to seek refuge and protection in other countries if they face persecution or serious threats to their lives or freedoms in their home country. It recognises the need for safe havens and support for those fleeing violence, war, or human rights abuses.

Right to a Nationality (Article 15): This right guarantees individuals the right to have nationality and citizenship. It protects people from statelessness and ensures that they can access the legal rights, benefits, and protections associated with citizenship.

Right to Marry and Found a Family (Article 16): This right grants adult men and women the freedom to marry and start a family without discrimination based on race, nationality, or religion. It emphasizes the importance of consent in marriage and promotes equal rights between partners during and after the marriage.

Right to Own Property (Article 17): This right ensures that individuals can own property, either alone or in association with others. It protects people from having their possessions arbitrarily taken away and allows them to enjoy the benefits and security that come with property ownership.

Understanding and upholding these Identity and Location Rights is vital in ensuring a world where individuals can live their lives with dignity, autonomy, and respect for their personal choices.

Specifically, UDHR Articles 12 to 17 apply to your social life, your freedom as an individual to move around, be safe where you are or go somewhere else in the case you are not, to marry and start a family. You also have the right to own your own things.

Technology has given governments the power to spy on people to an extraordinary degree, and social media amplifies attacks on a person’s privacy and reputation in ways that were unimaginable to previous generations. Alongside this situation, every website and every government agency mentions privacy policies and terms and conditions but a restatement and strengthening of individual privacy rights is sorely needed.
