Topic 8 – Rights and Consent
As you will find out in MODULE 10, Protecting our Rights, such imbalances of power and the patterns of abuse that follow become more oppressive and more violent the longer they go unchecked. One example of abuse is medical abuse. In MODULE 7, Social Needs and Development Rights, UDHR Article 25, the right to health, you will see a proposed solution to the current high levels of medical abuse, and in MODULE 10, we look at the need for fully informed consent before medical experiments can be performed on human beings.
For the past hundred years plus, greedy corporations have been pushing dangerous chemical medications on the populations of the countries where they operate. Prior to the pharmaceutical era, medicine was successfully using safer means to restore health. Some of these were very beneficial, but the arrival of the pharmaceutical industry as a powerful force in society has meant these beneficial procedures have been more or less erased from the public memory.
As a result, chemical medicine is seen by many as the only possible way to treat disease. We have arrived at a situation where suffering ill health is expected as a normal part of life. People willingly surrender to extreme and inappropriate treatments because they have been conditioned to believe there is no other choice.
The 1972 novel by Richard Adams, Watership Down, describes a similar situation by way of analogy. It is as though we have all arrived at the place in one of the chapters. The story is about the adventures of a group of rabbits as they seek somewhere safe to live. The chapter is Cowslip’s Warren. (A cowslip is a country flower in the United Kingdom, and a warren is a collection of burrows where rabbits live. Watership Down is a real village in the County of Hampshire in the south of England.)
In the book, Cowslip is a rabbit in charge of a warren where the farmer puts out food for the rabbits but also lays snares so rabbits are caught in the snares and killed for meat. Whenever a rabbit dies, the other rabbits are ordered to act as if that rabbit never existed. In current society, humans are sacrificed on the altar of medical experimentation or ‘treated’ with medications that cause other serious diseases.
