Topic 3: Remedies

Referring back to our use of the Broken Windows theory to apply to human rights, early and rapid action to correct small violations is essential to prevent small situations from developing into larger-scale violations of human rights.

NGOs

What are NGOs (non-governmental organisations), otherwise known as not-for-profit or non-profit organisations?

They are groups of people who may be professionals in their fields, like doctors and lawyers, or they may be individuals with a common objective to right the wrongs they experience or witness in society.

Violations of human rights can be fought directly or through the courts and legislation. What can you do?

  • You can help directly those whose rights have been violated, either by practical help or by protest and resistance.
  • You can lobby for changes to the law at the regional, national or international level
  • If you have legal expertise, you can help with drafting a new and stronger legal framework

It is absolutely vital to share knowledge of and respect for human rights and responsibilities and human dignity among the whole population at all levels
